SUPPORTING SINGLE WOMEN
Over recent years, fertility treatment for single women has been rising. So much so that in 2012, nearly 1,000 single women had fertility treatment with donor sperm at a UK licensed clinic – and that doesn’t include women trying at home. Headline sponsor,The London Women’s Clinic, has seen an increase too, which is why they have introduced a number of ways to support their single women patients. We ask them what they do to support single women seeking fertility treatment.
“In the last two years we have added in to our programme of events specific seminars for single women. “Our fortnightly Contemplating Single Motherhood seminars are a fantastic first step for women to understand what options are available to them. We will guide you through sperm donor selection, possible treatments and support you through your unique journey to success.” says Tracey Sainsbury who runs the seminars at the clinic.
So whether you are a fertile single woman or are a single infertile female looking for help to have a baby, we offer a range of treatments from sperm donation to single women ivf treatment.
Fertility treatment for single women is available in many different ways at the clinic. “The patient’s age, medical history and investigations will determine which treatment options will be best,” says Dr Shailaja Nair, Deputy Medical Director at the London Women’s Clinic. Such options may include intrauterine insemination, IVF or even treatment with donor eggs. But for some women, having a baby right now may not be at the forefront of their minds. For these women, egg freezing or embryo freezing are options.
The London Women’s Clinic has recognised that our single women patients may require some additional support. “Unlike our patient couples, our single women patients may come to the clinic on their own and therefore lack the support that a partner may provide including someone to talk over questions, hold their hand during embryo transfer or discuss their worries,” says Anya Sizer, Patient Co-ordinator.
With this in mind, the LWC has developed a Supporting Single Women programme especially for these patients. As well as additional support, our patient co-ordinators have developed special evening events for single women to meet each other. “The evenings provide our single women patients the opportunity to meet other women in a similar situation to them in a non-clinic setting,.” says Anya. So far, two events have taken place with a social event planned for the beginning of November and a Christmas event planned for December.
